For 250 years that corridor carried settlers, livestock, and trade through the valley between the Blue Ridge and the Iron Mountains. An official Virginia historical marker on Route 11 in Chilhowie identifies the westernmost point of European settlement in America as of 1750.
The settlement that became Chilhowie started as a small fort built by James Patton during a 1748 survey. That site eventually became "The Town House," one of the earliest permanent settlements in the region.
