About Abingdon and Washington County

Abingdon has been the county seat of Washington County since 1778. The town grew up along the Great Wagon Road that carried generations of Scots-Irish and German settlers down from Pennsylvania and the Shenandoah Valley. Those families built the first farmsteads in the region, and many of their descendants still work the same ground.

Today, Washington County is one of the largest livestock marketing centers east of the Mississippi River.
